Garance Matton

Garance Matton is a French artist born in 1992. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and having also studied at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, she currently lives and works in the Paris region.

Her practice is deeply informed by a sharp attention to classical traditions, particularly Italian painting from the Quattrocento. Over time, however, her work has evolved towards exploring hybrid forms, states of transformation, and transitions. Her paintings aim to bring together visual languages and temporalities that might not naturally align. It is precisely within this tension, this in-between space, that her artistic gesture takes shape. Rather than choosing between opposing poles, she delves into the interaction, friction, and fluidity between them. This creates an entanglement of materials, genres, and temporalities, resonating with the ideas of thinkers like Karen Barad, whose notions of the performativity of matter and the quantum logic of relationality find an intuitive reflection in her work.

Matton has exhibited in France, Spain, and Italy, at venues such as Poush Manifesto, and has collaborated with galleries such as Mathilde Le Coz, Annaruma, and Peter Kilchmann. She has been in residence at the Villa Belleville, the Ateliers du Plessix-Madeuc, and at Foair in the United States. Her work has been featured in numerous publications and interviews.
